«راجر تورنهیل» (گرانت) مدیر تبلیغاتی موفق اما خودخواه، روزی با مأموری مخفی بهنام «جرج کاپلان» اشتباه گرفته میشود. اشتباهی که منجر به کشانده شدنش به دنیائی از مخاطرات و دسیسه ها شده و او را وا میدارد برای حفظ جان خود ـ در حالی که به پلیس هم نمیتواند متوسل شود ـ تمام کشور را زیر پا بگذارد. در طول این مسیر رهآورد او عشقی تازه به زنی به نام «ایوکندال» (سینت) است.

شمال با نورث‌وست یا شمال از شمال غربی (به انگلیسی: North by Northwest) فیلمی آمریکایی محصول 1959 است که در گونهٔ دلهره‌آور توسط آلفرد هیچکاک کارگردانی شد.

ارنست لمن، نوشتن فیلمنامهٔ این فیلم را عهده‌دار بود و بازیگرانی چون کری گرانت، اوا ماری و جیمز میسون در آن نقش‌آفرینی کردند. چهل‌وششمین اثر هیچکاک، عنوان نامزدی 3 جایزه در سی‌ودومین مراسم اسکار از جمله نامزدی جایزهٔ اسکار بهترین فیلم‌نامهٔ اصلی برای ارنست لمن را در پی داشت.

موسیقی این فیلم همانند بسیاری از آثار دیگر هیچکاک، برعهدهٔ برنارد هرمن بود و تیتراژ ابتدای آن را نیز سال بس طراحی کرده‌است.

داستان فیلم، حکایت تودرتو و پرتعلیق از مردی است که ناخودآگاه خود را درگیر ماجرایی جاسوسی و اتهاماتی که به وی وارد آمده می‌بیند و زنی که در این میان قصد کمک به او را دارد.
