گروهی از خبرنگاران سعی دارند تا آخرین سخنان گفته شده توسط سرمایه دار کلان و رئیس روزنامه Rosebud آقای «چالرز فاستر کین» را رمزگشایی کنند. فیلم با نمایش حلقه ی چاپ روزنامه ای که تیتر آن زندگی نامه ی چارلز فاستر کین می باشد، شروع می شود. پس از آن ما تکه هایی از گذشته ی زندگی چارلز کین را می بینیم. همانطور که خبرنگاران تحقیق و جستجو بیشتری می کنند، تماشاگران به اوج و محبوبیت رسیدن یک مرد را مشاهده می کنند و در آخر می بینند چطور از قله ی دنیا به پایین کشیده می شود…
