دیوید میلز (براد پیت)، که به تازگی انتقالی گرفته و ویلیام سامرست (مورگان فریمن)، که بزودی بازنشسته می‌شود هر دو کارآگاه‌های جنایی هستند که عمیقاً درگیر پرونده یک قاتل سریالی دگرآزار می‌شوند. قاتلی که قتل‌های خود را به دقت بر طبق هفت گناه کبیره طرح‌ریزی کرده است: شکم‌پرستی، طمع، تنبلی، خشم، غرور، شهوت و حسادت.

این فیلم در روز 22 سپتامبر سال 1995 در ایالات متحده آمریکا منتشر شد. فیلم هفت با فروش 327 میلیون دلاری خود در گیشه‌های بین‌المللی به موفقیت تجاری دست یافت و انتقادهای مثبتی دریافت کرد.
