اسپارتا، میسی سیپی. در شبی گرم، »سام وود« (اوتس)، پلیس گشتی، جنازه ی کارخانه داری اهل شمال را می یابد و سپس در ایستگاه قطار به مرد سیاه پوستی مظنون می شود و او را دستگیر می کند. خیلی زود معلوم می شود که مرد، »ورجیل تیبز« (پواتیه) خود پلیس جنایی و از اهالی فیلادلفیا است. اما »بیل گیلسپی« (استایگر) رئیس پلیس جدید شهر مایل نیست که »تیبز« در این ماجرا دخالت بکند.
